How to Identify Valve Material Without Destructive Testing
When selling surplus industrial valves, knowing the material composition can significantly impact the price you receive. A stainless steel valve is worth substantially more than a carbon steel equivalent, and exotic alloys like Inconel or Monel can be worth 5-10x more than standard materials. Here's how to identify valve materials without sending them to a lab.
Reading the Nameplate
The fastest way to identify valve material is the nameplate. Look for these common material designations:
- WCB — Cast carbon steel (most common, least valuable per pound)
- WCC — Cast carbon steel for low-temperature service
- LCB/LCC — Low-temperature carbon steel
- CF8 — Cast 304 stainless steel
- CF8M — Cast 316 stainless steel (significantly more valuable)
- CF3M — Cast 316L stainless steel
- A105 — Forged carbon steel
- F304/F316 — Forged stainless steel
- F22 — Chrome-moly alloy (2.25Cr-1Mo)
- F91 — Modified 9Cr-1Mo (high-temperature service)
Visual Identification Methods
When nameplates are missing or illegible, visual cues can help:
Color and Surface Appearance
- Carbon Steel (WCB/A105) — Dark gray to black, often with rust. Magnetic.
- Stainless Steel (CF8M/316) — Silver-gray, smooth surface, minimal rust. Weakly magnetic or non-magnetic.
- Bronze — Golden/copper color, green patina with age. Non-magnetic.
- Duplex Stainless — Similar to 316 but slightly magnetic.
- Alloy 20/Inconel/Monel — Bright silver, very smooth, non-magnetic.
The Magnet Test
A simple magnet can narrow down materials quickly:
- Strongly magnetic — Carbon steel, chrome-moly, martensitic stainless
- Weakly magnetic — Duplex stainless, some cold-worked austenitic
- Non-magnetic — 304/316 stainless, Inconel, Monel, Alloy 20, bronze
Markings and Stamps
Beyond the nameplate, look for:
- Body castings often have material grade cast directly into the metal
- Heat numbers stamped on flanges correspond to MTR documentation
- Color coding painted on flanges (varies by facility)
- Tag wires with material information
Why Material Matters for Pricing
Material is one of the biggest factors in surplus valve pricing:
| Material | Relative Value (vs. WCB) | Scrap Value Factor |
|---|---|---|
| WCB Carbon Steel | 1.0x (baseline) | $0.08-0.12/lb |
| CF8M / 316 Stainless | 3-5x | $0.80-1.20/lb |
| Duplex Stainless | 5-8x | $1.50-2.50/lb |
| Alloy 20 | 8-12x | $3.00-5.00/lb |
| Inconel 625 | 15-25x | $8.00-12.00/lb |
| Monel 400 | 10-15x | $5.00-8.00/lb |
